Terengganu’s latest icon — the drawbridge linking Kuala Terengganu to Kuala Nerus — is expected to change the trend of tourist arrivals to the state which has so far concentrated in the islands.
The RM248 million-bridge spanning 638m which has two 16-storey towers is slated to be opened for trial for 15 days from Sunday (June 2) at 7 am. But now its already opened for all visitors....this heritage tourism not only provides commercial returns to industry players and small businesses, but also encourages and preserves Terengganu's natural heritage.

Langkawi is not a single island. Its is cluster of 99 islands off the western coastline of Malaysia mainland. Actually the are 5 more small islands that remain submerged and can sometimes be seen during lower tide.

Langkawi map

ETYMOLOGY

The name Langkawi is thought to have existed by the early 15th century, although in the 16th century the island of Langkawi was also marked on maps variously as Langa, Langka, Lansura, and Langapura. There are many suggestions for the origin of the name of Langkawi. According to one interpretation, Langkawi means island of the reddish-brown eagle, a Brahminy kite in colloquial Malay. The Malay word for eagle is helang(shortened to lang), and kawi is a red stone used as a chalk to mark goods. This interpretation was used to create the landmark sculpture of an eagle as the symbol of Langkawi at Dataran Helang (Eagle Square) in Kuah.

Tourism

On 1 June 2007, Langkawi Island was given a World Geopark status by UNESCO. Three of its main conservation areas in Langkawi Geopark are Machincang Cambrian Geoforest Park, Kilim Karst Geoforest Park and Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest park (Island of the Pregnant Maiden Lake). These three parks are the most popular tourism area within Langkawi Geopark. In 2014 Unesco allegedly issued a 'yellow card' warning threatening the status of the Geopark.

The Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark status was due for renewal in 2015, of which upon thorough inspection by the appointed Geopark Inspectors, Langkawi was issued the Certificate of Membership dubbed the Green Card by Asia Pacific Geoparks Network, under the auspices of the Global Geopark Network (GGN).

[Redang Island @ Pulau Redang, Terangganu, Malaysia]

Information Island You Need To know In Malaysia

Redang Island is famous for its crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches and the tropical fish that inhabit the numerous reefs, many within 50 feet of the shore. Its is one of nine islands, which form a marine sanctuary park offering snorkeling and diving opportunities for tourist.

History

The first settlers of Pulau Redang were belived to be the Bugis from Celebes, Indonesia. They established their first village at Teluk Kalong and later moved south to Pula Pinang (betel nut palm island), the island where the Marine Park Centre is located. Until recently, Kampung Air (Water Village) at Pulau Redang was home to a community of about 250 fishermen families belived to be descendants of these original Bugis settlers.

Many have since left the fishing trade and move into rapidly growing tourism industry. When Kampung Air was torn  down in 2001, a number of these families were relocated to the village inland, while others choose to move back to the mainland. Pulau Redang and its neighbouring islands became a protected Malaysian Marine Park in 1991 and is currently managed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE), Malaysia. Impact from human activities are managed to protect the marine environment and to conserve its coral reefs.

How to get to Pulau Redang

The island of Redang is relatively easy to acess from Kuala Lumpur if you take a plane or bus to Kuala Terengganu. From Kuala Terengganu airport or Terminal Bus you can take a taxi or grab to Tanjung Merang, a small fisherman's village which lies north of Kuala Terengganu. The boat ride to the island of Redang departs from Merang jetty and takes about 40 minutes to reach the island. Boat operators between Merang and Redang. During peak seasson there are also boats depart from Shahbandar jetty in Kuala Terengganu.

When to go to Pulau Redang

The best time to visit Redang is between April and October. However, in October it might already be too late. The northeast monsoon blows from November to March; resorts (with the exception of the Taaras Beach & Spa Resort) are closed during this period. Because of this monsoon the underwater worls is a lot less beautiful as visibility is bad and there are currents. Avoid the island during School holiday and public holiday, too many visitors came here.

[The Elephants of Kuala Gandah, Lanchang Pahang - 17 Feb 19]

The History of Kuala Gandah

The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) established the National Elephant Conservation Centre,  Kuala Gandah in 1989. The centre is a base for the Elephant Relocation Team, Which began the elephant traslocation programme in 1974. The only one of of its kind in Malaysia, the team is dedicated to locating, subduing and then translocating problem elephants from areas where their habitats are constantly being encroached by plantations, to other suitable habitats througout Peninsular Malaysia, including Taman Negara National Park.

Over the past 30 years, the 24 strong team has helped to prevent the futher decline of the elephant population by relocating more than 800 wild elephants. In addition to being the home of the translocating team and a herd of resident elephants, the centre also carries out public awareness activities related to elephant conservation isues in Malaysia and support research activities on elephant translocation and conservation. The centre is open to visitors throughout year. Visitor can assist in bathing and feeding them.

The Elephants of Kuala Gandah

It is estimated that there are only 1,200 wild Asian Elephants, also known as Elephas Maximus, left in Malaysia. National Elephant Conservation Centre, Kuala Gandah, Temerloh, Pahang is the only coservation centre set up to relocate these displaced pachyderms and house elephants that are seriously injured and those with zero chance of survical in the wild on their own. The elephants here have been rescued from all over Peninsular Malaysia, and given save sanctuary.

Meet Selendang, the 12 years old with a missing foot who was caught in a cruel trap set by poachers. Or Sanum, the survivor of a tiger attack. There is our one tusked hero Lasah, and kind caring Abot, decscending of Cek Mek, Kuala Gandah's most renowned elephant guide. Also see Lokimala - the oldest surviving elephant at 79 years old - a rare feat as most elephants live only til  60 years in the wild.
